You know one of those bummer situations when you go to a restaurant and that waiter brings you completely different order, but it tastes really good? It's great, you ate some delicious food and you're not hungry anymore, but you're still disappointed because that's not what you expected. So that's what I was feeling after watch The River. It is so not what I expected for many reasons, but also so good - for many other reasons.
First things first, I'll start with a quick recap and then continue dissecting this show. The pilot introduced us to the characters: famed explorer with his own TV program Dr. Emmet Cole, who went missing six months ago somewhere on Amazon, his wife Tess, who decided to organize a team to go look for him after his beacon suddenly went off, his son Lincoln, who was at first fine with burying an empty coffin, but then decided to join the team, Lena, daughter of a missing cameraman Russ Landry, Clark, Cole's producer, Capt. Kurt Brynildson, the guy with all the guns, Emilio, ship's mechanic, and his teenage daughter Jahel with mystical powers and great knowledge of magic (and with no knowledge of English), A.J. Poulain, a cameraman, and another cameraman Jed, who got killed in the pilot.
So there you have it, everybody (expect Dr. Cole, obviously) sat on a boat and went exploring. They found Magus, Emmet's boat, empty and abandoned. One of the rooms was sealed shut. Obviously, they put a great effort into opening it and obviously nothing good came out of it. Not sure what exactly came out of it, banshee or some sort of evil spirit of one of Emmet's team members. They also found a footage on the boat, where Emmet said this banshee killed four of them. And then this banshee killed Jed and afterwards told Tess that Emmet was alive by cutting her twice (she asked for that, I guess that was meant to show us how desperate, or just crazy, she is; not sure though about trusting a ghost who was sealed for god knows how long, it's not like he was getting any updates on Emmet's whereabouts, Emmet just didn't seem like a postcards-to-every-ghost-who-tried-to-kill-me kind of guy. But what do I know). So yeah, about the banshee - Lincoln caught him and threw him in the river. Didn't even have to seal a room again. I really hope they gave Jed a proper burial because banshees are not much fun.

Second episode got a little bit scarier as the team found a tree draped in children's dolls and decided to spend the night there. Meanwhile, Jahel got possessed by Emmet's spirit through a dragonfly that flew into her mouth. Jahel/Emmet were very persuasive in convincing his relatives stop trying to find him, but of course they didn't listen. The really weird part was how quick they all adapted to everything supernatural around them and momentarily forgot about Jed's death. Sure, an angry spirit of someone they used to know murdered a member of their team and injured others - no biggie, happens all the time. So anyway, on the tree with dolls Lincoln found his old toy and took it back. Turned out all the dolls were belongings of another angry spirit, a dead girl who drown because her mother wasn't there for her. Someone of the team just conveniently knew all this stuff and even knew what to do about it: Lincoln was supposed to return the toy back. But the spirit, who have already kidnapped Tess, wasn't in the forgiving mood and didn't want to take it back. So then Lincoln dug up bones of the spirit's mother and brought them to her, which I personally found to be pretty badass. Keep it up, Lincoln! Tess got out of the grave (the camera was conveniently left there by sloppy A.J., I guess) and everyone returned on the boat safely. The end.
A lot of stuff was not very logical and convincing, but pretty entertaining. As I was saying earlier, some things that were expected from this show just weren't there. First of all, people who are still waiting for the next Lost - no dice again. The River has nothing similar with Lost whatsoever, so that's was one of the disappointing things, because, yeah, I'm waiting for the next Lost too. Secondly, The River is anything but horror. Scary dolls? Sure, the intentions were great, but the way it was all executed…Let me put it this way -The Secret Circle is scarier. Can't say it disappoints me though, because I'm not really into scary stuff, but The River is ridiculously not scary. Third thing that I expected and that The River seems not to have is money. I mean, ABC won a bidding war against NBC for the rights to this show, the least they could do is make it look more expensive! I I don't know any of the actors and I'm so not impressed with CGI. What happened to you, ABC? I expected more.

So that was disappointing stuff, just to get it out of my system. The tasty stuff:
- Found-footage goes on TV!
Well that's a step in a new direction, to say the least. I know a lot of people hate that, but I personally am a sucker for found-footage stories and I don't care even if cameras are way too everywhere and some angles just couldn't be covered in real life. Come on you guys, it's television! At least they tried to make it look realistic.
- Dr. Emmet Cole seems to be a quite interesting person.
Now that's a guy I also want to find! Dude can hold a fireball in his hands and can transform his spirit into a dragonfly and possess folks. Finally, a mission that makes sense not only to the characters, but to the viewers also.
- Not everyone on the team wants to find Cole.
It seems as Capt. Kurt Brynildson has plans to find out if Cole found "the source" and then possibly kill him . The whole plot line was not been developed yet, but at least they already planted a seed of suspicion and betrayal.
- Lena is the chosen one.
I laughed out loud when it was shown that Cole had mistaken and Lincoln isn't actually the chosen one, Lena is. I guess this is why he called her all the time, not his own son? Who knows. Also, I'm really happy Lena will be more than just an eye candy (which she is).
- The rest of the team seem pretty okay, too.
There is not much to say about their personalities yet, because most of the time they were just wondering around looking concerned or running around scared, but I didn't hate anyone of them, so that's good. Emilio and especially his daughter seem to be the most interesting and useful right now, because they have some ideas about what the hell is happening, and I liked that Jahel doesn't speak English, it makes her look all mysterious. She tried to warn them so many times about the banshee, but it was [untranslatable] and it was hilarious. This show is hilarious.
I don't have high expectations for the next episodes, but I'm looking forward to them. Right now The River can go both ways: either become terrible and unwatchable (if it continues to be so unrealistic and simple), or become extremely entertaining (if it becomes more scary, weirder and deeper). For now, I would definitely recommend you to check it out.
