This is not ambiguous, if you answered this question with anything that is mainstream, that was an epic fail.

-Why you are neglecting your first question?
-It's not an epic fail, because you , like I pointed out before, asked two questions.

What makes your research or the data that you are collecting so goddamn important that makes you act like such a condescending jerk towards everyone. Can you give us a credible reason why you are researching this besides free time, or curiosity?

From what I can tell, he neglects his first question so that he can feel a false sense of superiority. If he neglects the "what games are girls playing" question and focuses on the "what OBSCURE games are you girls playing" part, it becomes less of a gender based, "hey baby how YOU doin" pick-up line and it seems like curiosity or searching for a new game. But if he was searching for a new game and had no gender-based motives, then he should have made the question gender blind in general.

I don't know. Just how I see it.

It's a common defense mechanism, really. Someone will make a statement without putting much thought into it, realize it may either be slightly offensive or just plain silly, and then they'll just spend every second trying to cover their tracks.

Then again, he went above and beyond with this one. Calling a group fail just because we don't see your point of view? Classy, dude. Classy. I hate to pull the Salem mentality here- but honestly, if WE'RE all feeling the same way, and expressing it with actual fore-thought, then can you really claim that every person here is dumb?

Honestly, just scale back, dude. People are just expressing opinions here, and if you get defensive you WILL be slaughtered. It WILL be a fucking fatality. NO SURVIVORS. Save your ass while you still can.

Oh, and to quote Laika...."Quit getting so butthurt!"

i think there are two possibilities here:

1) this boy is doing secret research on women. probably in an attempt to better understand our crazy species and give him something to talk to us about. or for a science experiment, maybe trying to find the criteria for a perfect woman. like weird science.

2) he's secretly a chick and needs some recommendations, but he's played pretty much everything in the top sellers list.

don't be so silly, kitten. we're friendly people to you call us dumb and then you'll get a whole lotta people on your bad side which you will eventually regret. and in scenario number two, will probably also cry about later.

Scenario two: I'll fuck her with a rake.

That's about right.

One of my all-time favorites is Ultima Online.

I play WoW, but UO is my first love.

I also like 2Moons.

Oh, Borderlands is pretty bad ass.

EDIT: I love how I reply without looking at the second page, lol.

I want resolution.

Ladies, please. Stop making fools of yourselves. Did he injure your fragile feminist egos by suggesting there are differences between men and women? God, I hate being a chick sometimes. Guilty by association.

Let me ask a similar question - what kind of music do girls like? If you answer "rock," that does not provide me with the information I'm looking for. It's too broad. Baroque rock, on the other hand, is a much more specific category.

His reason for disregarding mainstream games is not to make himself feel more elite. They are simply too well-known to be statistically significant. In requesting lesser-known games, any who respond are more likely to enjoy that game for very specific reasons, not just because it's all they know or have heard of. I'm not a gamer, but I could say I like BioShock, Halo, MW2, Mass Effect, Borderlands, etc. I haven't played any of them extensively, but I've certainly heard of them. Therein lies the problem - I'm sure these games are really great and merit favoritism, but there's no way you could distinguish people who are pulling these names out of their asses so they can feel like part of the community.

So, of the games I have played, my favorite was Jet Set Radio Future. I have no idea if it's well-known, but I've played it through at least four or five times. I enjoy it for the weird music, the art style and the freedom to dick around. The concept is what hooked me most - a group of young renegades rollerblading around Tokyo, defying authority and battling rival gangs in a street art war.

I also like any rhythm game, especially Rhythm Heaven. Probably has more to do with the fact that I'm a band nerd than my gender, though.

I'd love to see some stats that back this.

I'm with 0 ! on this one. All girls I know play exactly the same games as the guys I know.

The thing is I'm not talking about things that might repulse as much as I'm talking about things that attract. This is why I'm specifically looking for answers that are less mainstream. I'm not expecting it to be wildly different, that it may be games that most guys wouldn't play, but perhaps the demographic is different in that the percentile thereof is attracted to a certain type of thing more often.

Zanaso Bayncuh wrote: Again, things that are specifically gender-based are not the point of the question. It isn't that I necessarily assumed that there was a relevance, but over time and having noticed some things for myself over the years,[b] it seems like there are certain games or genres that seem to be completely unable to attract females to the fold vs. other types of games in comparison to how many girls game. RTS for example, I've met plenty of gaming gals, none that play RTS.l/b] So the point is identifying relevant factors... though posting this thread here and only here is incredibly unlikely to bring enough data to the pool. Seeing as how Spasmodiac is the only person who's even mentioned a game that is really outside of the box - even though that's specifically what the question specifies.

Is there something only attractive to males in RTS, or something repelling females?

I highly doubt that pure game mechanics have certain gender appeal or repulsion.

I don't doubt that culture conditions genders to feel attraction/repulsion to certain themes. For example:

Spasmodiac wrote: The only game I've really played that isn't so mainstream is Ar Tonelico. It's essentially like every other RPG, but there's so much you can take as sexual innuendo, so I get giddy when I play it.

rivertam2x2 wrote: I enjoy it for the weird music, the art style and the freedom to dick around. The concept is what hooked me most - a group of young renegades rollerblading around Tokyo, defying authority and battling rival gangs in a street art war.

Perhaps an RTS could be themed in such ways?

Then again, in my own experience, I have trouble finding male RTS players. I have even more trouble finding TBS players of either gender.

Why does the Wii capture a greater proportion of total female console ownership than it does male console ownership? The type of games it runs? I don't know, but I would never have guessed such from my own experience.

I think the fact that both girls and guys are just as into the mainstream games, such that only obscure answers would reveal any differences, is evidence against any gender difference. Like it seems with most products, the market is driven by cultural pressure. Theme is much more susceptible to cultural pressures than game mechanics, but are girls likely to be more susceptible to cultural pressure - hence concentrating on theme - than guys?

Generally I'm a huge Zelda fan, but to be honest I haven't played any games in months, aside from Pokemon and WoW. It's so sad..
