How about a section on your profile for favorite webcomics/websites?

That is in the works and believe it or not, we're going to start adding some functionality and fixing some bugs very soon after over a year of being lazy and doing nothing.

Not sure if this has been suggested or not, is there a way for a profile to be deleted or at least be hidden when it has been inactive for a long period of time. Just saying this, because I'm tired of seeing a bunch of inactive profiles on this site.

You guys would be surprised, I just did a quick lookup and over 200 different members logged on in the past week.

We could add a site-wide option that allows members to hide other members from all lists who haven't logged on in x amount of days/weeks. I don't think that would be too hard.

That being said, I am starting to work on the site in earnest today.

Will be adding new sections and stuff, can't say how long it's going to take but things are starting to rattle around behind the scenes.

Two hundred is about what I figured. Out of over 4000, that's unfortunate. I like the remove from lists option. I think that would be quite helpful.

I've been talking about it forever but if all goes well, there will be two new sections being added: Articles and Reviews.

Articles will be general interest and opinion articles about anything and everything and reviews will be er, reviews: games, TV shows, movies & gadgets.

There will also be (hopefully) some front page tweaks getting rid of that "Welcome" stuff first and foremost.

Doesn't sound like much on the surface but it could be pretty cool if everything works out.

At the very least there will be new content that could theoretically get people to come back to the site and sign up if they're not a member.

As always, any other suggestions for the site while we're in the beginning phases of planning this major change is welcome as well.

Is this somehow distinct from the forum?

Also, while you're talking about major changes, would you be considering content that's fundamentally different either intrinsically or in its organization?

I don't pretend to have thoroughly explored or used the site, but from my perspective, it seems to be:

*A URL with some level of exposure and association with geekiness, beyond the domain name. Obviously, there's a lot of factors that go into this.

*A profile system which enables a limited amount of 'hit or miss' search and matching criteria. Keyword search... for the lucky people.

*A private message/winking system, which for some reason must delete sent messages?

*Then there's the 'favorited by' feature, which doesn't make a lot of sense, as it doesn't ask the favorite's permission, and so they could be favorited by spammers or others with no association.

*Blurbs... with notifications and whatnot.

*Then a forum, with the now standard forum features, like posting history, user rankings, etc.
---

So... register, fill out profile, search for matches, chat them up, wait to be notified of new matches.

The only thing that really changes is the forum. I don't know about the other 200 users, but to me at least, and probably others active on the board, FYG isn't enabling us to do anything we couldn't with any other forum.

I think things would be more interesting if users could create quizzes, or add user-created fields to their profiles, which would then be search able.
The forums could use some enhancements, but that's off topic, unless FYG is in the business of forum tech.

Depending on how they're presented/exposed, and how users are notified of them, articles and reviews could be interesting, but it offers much of the same the forum did: the ability to write/speak.

If FYG is to standout from a handful of similar sites competing for exactly the same niche, it needs to invent new kinds of content that will inspire the otherwise bored/lonely/shy user to create something. Something that may have a better chance at involving them with others than would writing a profile, speaking in front of a large group, or *shudders* cold messaging/blurbing.

I'd ask though, what the point of FYG -- or any other social networking site -- is now, in this age of Facebook dominance? Facebook now groups people onto pages based on interests they've listed. It's not as hard as it used to be to find even stealth geeks through obscure titles and whatnot.

What is FYG's mission statement? How does FYG justify its existence? Where does FYG fit among the multitude of other social software, services, and directories?

Ok, let me try to address everything.

Is this somehow distinct from the forum?

Also, while you're talking about major changes, would you be considering content that's fundamentally different either intrinsically or in its organization?

Yes, it's going to be very distinct from the forums but also possibly integrated with the forums. Think more along the lines of an opinion section on newspaper site and a reviews section on a gaming site.

For example, maybe there will be an article posted "Why the Wii sucks" or "Solutions to world energy problems". And in the reviews section someone might review Halo: Reach for the Xbox 360. Still working out the specifics but there will either be a comments section directly on the article/review page or a link to "discuss this article/review" which will bring you to an auto-generated thread in a new forum.

I think things would be more interesting if users could create quizzes, or add user-created fields to their profiles, which would then be search able.

The forums could use some enhancements, but that's off topic, unless FYG is in the business of forum tech.

Agreed, more user created content would be a good thing, open to suggestions. Also, I created these forums from the ground up, they're completely proprietary so we can pretty much do anything we want with them.

The bytes field is a free-form text field available in your profile btw. I just checked and for some reason I never added it to the search function so I just did that and it's now searchable from the search screen.

Depending on how they're presented/exposed, and how users are notified of them, articles and reviews could be interesting, but it offers much of the same the forum did: the ability to write/speak.

I've toyed with the idea of email notifications for certain things but I find that they always seem to annoy people more than help. I think we've sent out three bulletins here over the three year lifespan. I guess we could send out new member notifications based on geographical location but until we can maintain new members at a decent clip instead of 10-15 a week it might not be worth the effort.

Yeah, we're working on that and hopefully this new piece will start to address those ideas.

I'd ask though, what the point of FYG -- or any other social networking site -- is now, in this age of Facebook dominance? Facebook now groups people onto pages based on interests they've listed. It's not as hard as it used to be to find even stealth geeks through obscure titles and whatnot.

I've probably said this before but the point of this site is, well, there really isn't one. I didn't set out to "take on" Facebook et al, I was just sitting around one day and someone linked me to some profile on a geek dating site and I thought wow, this site sucks. Then I found out it was the most popular geek dating site and people paid for it and thought that I could definitely do better. Didn't really have a plan and I just kind of winged it. Aside from number of members, I think I did succeed in slaying that site in every way except I don't have revenue coming in so I can't really advertise which is why we grow so slowly.

I'd love to add new stuff to this site all the time (I have a list of enhancements I've come up with and culled from this thread three pages long) but unfortunately it's just me and I have an RL job that occupies most of my free time and working on this site for free is not exactly attractive to programmers so I pretty much have to go at it alone.

Hope all that helps

0 ! just gave me an idea regarding user content. It's a little bit similar to okcupid, in that it's a quiz but it's a personalized quiz for each profile. We could make our own "Are you my geek/Are you a match?" quiz, anywhere from 5 to 100 questions (I seriously doubt anyone's gonna go that far, except 0 !, but it's nice to have the option). People visiting your profile who are interested in you can take it and when they finish, it gives them a score and either says "would you like to message them now?" with a PM link or sends the person a message saying "so and so matched such and such percent with you."

Kinda rough, I guess but it's a solid idea, I think.

Yeah, no, I went well beyond 100 questions. Over a couple days I actually exhausted every question in their database. It won't simply layout your top matches, and they got rid of WTF reports that detailed exactly what questions contributed to high match scores.

With all the clout that 'question importance' had, they should've allowed users to save back-up 'importance profiles'.

Then there were a zillions of user created quizzes, I don't think you could search people by the results those returned.

The most popular explicitly geek site is horrendous in features, but for some reason, there's people there who've written very fine profiles. Finding them is nearly impossible though, unless you try reading all of them. Which is ironic, because finding the site itself is so easy.
They do have a simple personality compatibility quiz, and a blogging system. Why anyone pays for that is beyond me.

As a forum regular, I can say I have a quite a bit of free time. The opportunity to contribute more than posts to this site could actually be attractive.

I guess, with free hosting accounts that support PHP, SQL and whatnot, anyone could test their implementation of your proposed 'challenges' and then submit them to you for approval and integration?

There's definitely some push for ideas, and if forum regulars actually implemented some of them, I think there could be some genuine excitement around here. More people would probably be motivated learn about it, and suggest more ideas, etc.

Then, there's nothing stopping anybody from implementing these things right now.

Looking forward to the new features, though, it'd really be awesome if one of the regulars would take that first step by developing a feature.
